Here's to 35 More: Happy Birthday Kobe Bean Bryant

Today is Bean's birthday. On this day, 35 years ago, the second greatest shooting guard and one of the top 10 players of all time was born. Kobe aka "the Black Mamba" is most assuredly my favorite player in the league, and has been since Jordan retired. (Huh? The Wizards? What are you talking about?) This blog post would go on forever if I listed every single one of Bean's great plays and accomplishments. So I'm just going to drop [some of] my favorite moments of his, along with some videos. Happy 35th #24.

Favorite Kobe Moments:
  • Kobe Bryant scores 81 points as the Lakers defeat the Raptors
  • Kobe outscores the entire Dallas Mavericks team 62 to 61 in 3 quarters.
  • Kobe shatters the single game three-pointer record as he hits 12 threes in a single game. 9 of them in a row.
  • "Old Man Kobe" scoring 37 points in the 2012 All-Star game after ESPN commented on his age holding him back in the upcoming ASG.
  • Kobe tapping Alvin Gentry in the 2010 WCF against the Suns after hitting an impossible three pointer.
  • Kobe throwing Shaq that one-handed oop in the '00 Finals where Shaq points to Kobe with the "OOOOOO!" face after. Which is ironically the "ball-hogs"'s most famous finals play.
  • That run in 2003 when we thought Kobe was never gonna play another game without scoring 40 or more.
  • The 2013 All-Star game when Kobe put LeBron in jail for like the last 2 minutes. the reactions on twitter were comedy GOLD.
  • And lastly, Kobe's 2013 dunk on Josh Smith where if it's 8:24PM and you close your left eye and squint real hard you can see #8 flash on Kobe's jersey in place of #24 for like .3 seconds.
Now enjoy these highlights of the greatest Laker of all time.

New Gladiator Mode Trailer & Photos from RYSE for Xbox One

Gladiator mode is the multiplayer mode featured on the Xbox One's RYSE: Son of Rome. Peep the trailer and photos below and hit the link for more detailed information on the newly announced feature.

Xbox Wire: RYSE Gladiator Mode

Be Your Own Hero. “Ryse” offers a large variety of armor, weapons, shields, and consumables to customize your own unique gladiator. These items are earned through gold rewarded from victories in combat and impact your stats by improving your focus, XP, crowd reaction, and health. Consumables are elixirs that have a temporary effect, such as improving health or allowing instant kills.

Dynamic Tile Sets. Inspired by the movable floor pieces used to re-create historic battles in the ancient Colosseum, “Ryse” uses dynamic “tile sets” of scenery to provide a continuous stream of unpredictable challenges. Scenery hidden in the hypogeum literally erupts from the floor, providing players with settings ranging from strongholds, to ruins, to naval battles.

Game Types:

Courtyard is an open environment highlighting the dynamic nature of the Colosseum.  With each wave new dangers are introduced to the Arena, from flaming pits, to deadly traps, to automated catapults.

Stronghold shows off the ability to completely change the environment, re-creating a battle between Roman forces and the barbarian hordes in the distant pagan lands of Germania.

There are also perks:

Perks. The Perk system lets the player decide which rewards they want from hitting the execution timing windows. They can choose between increased damage, XP, health and Focus. When Focus is sufficiently built up the player can trigger a large area effect that slows enemies. In Gladiator Mode, perks are assigned based on which god players choose at the beginning of the match, and players can receive benefit from their partner’s perk if they are nearby.

Sony Inks New Deal With Viacom to Stream TV Online. Service Expected for PS4

So it seems that TV may be coming to the Playstation 4 after all. Sony has just inked a new deal to stream Viacom TV over an internet service (think Netflix/HBO Go, maybe with live channels as well), which is expected to be available on the PS4. It's a step forward to adding heavier entertainment features to the PS4, along with what Sony announced at E3. Details are scare at the moment, I'll update this post as new info comes in.

The Zombie Apocalypse comes to the PS4 and Xbox One In First Person: Dying Light Gameplay Trailer

Dying Light is an FPS-Survival Horror game from Warner Brothers Games. If you've ever played Deep Silver's Dead Island it's pretty much the very same game except on next-gen. I even thought the game was a pseudo-sequel to Dead Island till I found out it wasn't a Deep Silver game. None the less, check out the 12 minute gameplay demo video here:

We Are Not Worthy: Rockstar Posts GTA Online Video (Plus Info Blowout)

First things first, watch the trailer in all of its amazingness:

Mind blown right? I Know. Now the game is so big that it's releasing separately on October 1st, as Rockstar still has some things to iron out. Don't worry you get a code to download it free with your copy of GTA V. Now peep these extra details that spilled out from Gamespot & Kotaku after the video dropped.

  • There's a stock market, which won't be available at launch but will be insane whenever Rockstar does put it in. You can invest in a car manufacturer and then storm around the city destroying every one of their cars so they have to pump out more (and their stock increases accordingly).
  • There's also a fascinating new take on spectator mode, GameSpot reports: you could be in your apartment and see a police car down below your window somewhere, turn on the TV, and watch one of your friends run-n-gun with cops in real time.
  • When the multiplayer mode launches, it'll be accessible through your character select wheel: in addition to the main three characters, Michael, Trevor, and Franklin, you'll have a fourth option for multiplayer.
  • AI characters "will react to the urgency in your voice," CVG says. Whoa. And... "Suddenly, a Rockstar developer sat next to us starts chatting into his headset and his on-screen character does the same, lip-synching broadly in time."
  • While GTA Online seems like it's mostly made for multiplayer, there'll be ways to solo at least some of it. According to Rockstar: "In Grand Theft Auto Online, players have the freedom to explore alone or with friends, work cooperatively to complete missions…"
  • Switching over to GTA Online, you're immediately dropped into a world shared by 16 players. No need to match up with other people using some free-roaming lobby--merely jumping into GTA Online is enough to tell the game you're ready to free-roam alongside other players.
  • You and some buddies want to throw on a couple masks and hold up a convenience store for a quick bit of cash. Easy money, right? Well, the player who physically receives the money from the cashier gets to decide how it's split between the team. If your buddy stiffs you on your share of the profit, you can either chase him down and steal it for yourself or keep your hands clean by hiring a hitman to take him out--it's your call.
  • The game even tracks who your rivals are and lets you know when they've come online so that you can exact a little vengeance.
  • Deposit your money into your bank account as often as you can. When another player kills you, they can snatch the wallet right from your dead body.
  • There are missions unique to multiplayer and as such they've been designed for a cooperative style of play. One of the missions Rockstar showed was a large-scale operation requiring a crew of players to sneak into an airport, take out a crew of armed guards, and fly away in a military cargo plane. If that weren't challenging enough, the players also had to fly it clear across the map and successfully land the thing in a ramshackle airstrip out in the middle of nowhere.
  • While heists are the centerpiece missions of the game, there are plenty of smaller, more ambient missions out there to take on. This includes things like assaulting a gang hideout, stealing armored cars you happen to run into on the freeway
  • At the heart of GTA Online's progression system is an economy that allows for some very interesting ways to invest your money. You've got the standard purchase options that any GTA veteran will expect to see, including weapons, vehicles, and a slew of player homes.
  • Now that player-owned vehicles occupy a permanent place in the world--they no longer disappear into the ether when you leave them somewhere--you can insure your fleet of cars to make sure all the money you've spent on upgrading them doesn't go to waste should you happen to encounter any wayward rockets.
  • Say you're hanging out in your high-rise apartment enjoying the view down below. You spot a flurry of red and blue lights in the distance and decide to see what's going on. So you switch on your TV, tune into the news, and suddenly you're watching your friend fleeing from the police in real-time thanks to the news helicopter flying directly above him.
  • Beyond little touches like this, you can use your apartment for more practical uses, as well--like getting your friends together to go over the details of a heist in your planning room or keeping a watchful eye on your 10-car garage using a closed-circuit security camera feed.
  • You can even take a shower to wash off the blood after a particularly brutal mission. It's borderline ridiculous just how much Rockstar has done with these player-owned properties.
  • With each mission, you'll be racking up a form of experience called RP, or reputation points. The greater your reputation, the more characters you'll meet. The more characters you meet, the more favors you can call on.
  • If you're fleeing from another player, you can call up a buddy to hide your radar blip. If you're looking for work, you can have them send you a list of cars to steal. And if you're truly desperate, you can call up a private security company to quite literally bring in an airstrike.
  • What's crazy about all this is that you can call in these favors whether you're messing around in free-roam, or competing in an organized deathmatch or race or any of the other match types.
  • Your player has a smartphone with apps, and you can bring up contacts and missions this way. You can also change your smartphone.
  • You can pay a personal mechanic to fix your cars automatically, or deliver them to any location.
  • As GTA Online develops, it's sensible to expect the 'Whales' to rise to the top - players with more time and skill with the highest levels of RP and cash. However, it's possible to spread the wealth by sharing cash, weapons and ammo among your team. In turn, they can 'defect' and try to steal your cash so, like life, GTA Online is an exercise in trust and social dynamics.
  • GTA Online detects how noisy you are, so you could shout or open fire to distract a guard while a friend sneaks by.
  • GTA Online includes The Feed. It's like GTA Online's version of twitter, which appears on screen to relay all your emails, texts and messages from Social Club.
  • At one extreme, you might need a bodyguard to make drops at the bank.
  • Leslie Benzies claims that Los Santos is only the beginning. The volume of creator tools, missions and items will grow, but at some stage GTA Online will head into new locations. He suggested they were sitting on a lot of content, and it doesn't take a genius to speculate what it might be. (OMG <white girl voice> Liberty City and *drumroll* VICE CITY)
Somebody call President Obama. We need to schedule September 17th and October 1st as national holidays. I can't wait.

Are You Using IFTTT? You Should Be.

What's IFTTT you ask? That would be "IF This Then That". Think of it like the internet as you use it already, but automated. Talk about convenient. It works sort of like the human nervous system. When one thing happens, it triggers another, automatically. Take for example your iPhone or Android photos. With IFTTT, you can tell the service to take every photo you take with your smartphone and upload it to a cloud service. Or you can tell it to upload those pictures to Facebook, Picasa, Twitter or whatever else. These automations are called "recipes" and any of them you make can be shared for others to use, as you can use recipes created by other people as well. All the current services compatible with IFTTT are listed here, and the list is constantly growing. And if you felt like browsing the recipes to get an idea of some of the automations you can check those here.

(side note: if you're reading this from the twitter post, click on it and you'll notice that it was posted to twitter through IFTTT, since Blogger doesn't have an auto-tweet option. Nifty eh?)

Check It Out: Thirds Eye View by @Al_Patron

My boy Al Patron, aka @Al_Patron, aka Little Bastard Boy, aka NYK Coach Mike Woodson debuted on the literary scene with his original piece Thirds Eye View. The best way I can describe this book is: someone was recording that one friend we all have who always brings up useful topics in conversation, and then wrote down what he said, in novel form. The best way for you to understand what i am saying, is to read what Sir Patron is saying. Check the links below for your portal into the third eye. And also keep a look out for my next post about his second entry Forks In The Road.

Battlefield 4 "Ultra" Settings PC Gameplay Trailer

That my friends, is one beautiful game.

If You Needed A Reason to Get A Next-gen Console, Here It Is: The Division

Tom Clancy's: The Division is quite possibly the most interesting game I have seen announced for the next-gen consoles. It's an open-world MMO game that is a combination of a third-person shooter and an RPG. The focus of the game is multiplayer & PVP combat, (though you can play it by yourself, good luck getting far that way) and with the devs saying there is no upper limit for clan sizes, that leaves the door open for endless amounts of chaos. I am telling you now this is the game to watch, when it releases it's going to sweep the reviews and award shows just like The Last of Us has/will. Check out the screens below then watch the trailer and see for yourself the kind of promise this game has.

Metal Gear Solid V Might Be the Best Looking Game You've Ever Seen

Metal Gear Solid 4 was undoubtably the best looking PS3 game when it was released. And it retained that crown for quite some time before a certain adventurous descendent of a famous British sea captain charted some treasures on PS3s worldwide. But now, MGSV is coming and it wants that trophy back, except this time it's the PS4 crown it wants. Check out the screens below, and i tossed in the E3 trailer for good measure.

Some New Assassin's Creed IV Screens from Comic-con

Enjoy.

CliffyB Returns to Developing Games

It's been a while since we've heard from Mr. Blezinski on the developing side since he left Epic, but he's teased his new game with a screenshot he posted on "whosay" yesterday. Check it out below.
